Seeing is thinking. Just as you can think out loud, you can think in pictures. Thinking involves taking random pieces of our private experience and putting them together in an orderly manner. The act of seeing is no less an act of construction, a way of making sense of the world.

We like what is familiar to us and tend to back away from the unusual. Becoming more visually literate makes us more flexible. Some people only use photography as a means of recording and categorizing objects.
