Estimating Exploration

One of the most common questions I’m asked is, “How can I estimate the amount of time to allocate to exploring?”

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question. The answer depends too much on the quality of the code base, the complexity of the system, and the number of variations you need to include in your exploration. You know far better than I do how much time you would need in order to explore your software to your satisfaction.

Usually when I offer this answer, the person questioning me nods in agreement. “That’s right,” the person says. “But how much time should I allocate…?”
