The first step in learning to observe more effectively is to recognize the opportunities to look past the obvious. Here are some things to try:

  • Tune out the things you usually watch carefully; pay attention to details you usually ignore.

  • Find a way to dig deeper. Consider an area of an application that you might explore, and ask yourself how you can get beyond the superficial observations to something that’s more difficult to discover but more interesting and meaningful if you do.

  • Discover at least one new monitoring application, console, or log file that you can watch while exploring.
