CHAPTER 4: THE FUTURE AND ISO9000

In an earlier chapter, describing the development of ISO9001, it was stated that all ISO documents go through periodic review and possible revision. The cycle has, historically, taken some six to eight years to complete (1987–94, 2000, 2008), and it is likely that the next version will be released sometime in 2015.

The ISO Committee process of identifying revisions, drafting, review, and approvals is defined by the following phases:

  • vote to revise;
  • new work item proposal;
  • plenary meeting – start work;
  • first committee draft issued;
  • draft international standard (DIS) for ballot;
  • final draft international standard (FDIS) for ballot;
  • standard issued.
