Photoelasticity

9.1 INTRODUCTION

Photoelasticity is a whole field stress analysis technique using the relative retardation between two components of a light vector along the directions of two principal stresses at a point on a photoelastic model. A photoelastic model is a transparent material possessing the property of birefringence (or temporary double refraction). Without external load, the model is optically isotropic and when it is loaded, refractive index changes along the directions of principal stresses in the model.
