Ursula Friede describes the experience of “feeling their way” to better automation. She and her team did not plan the steps they ended up taking, but it would have been a good plan if they had. They began by just experimenting with a tool but soon realized its limitations, so they decided to focus on the most pressing problems by changing their automation. In each of four phases, they successfully addressed an existing problem but then encountered new problems.
