THERE ARE TWO reasons to assess a leader's experience. The first is to judge job qualification: A leader's experience is a critical component of his or her readiness for a future role and for identifying positions that would be a good fit. The second is to use the assessment as a development tool: Experience is a key vehicle for converting potential into readiness, and understanding a person's current state helps plan next steps in experience.
