Introduction

This book originated in workshops taught at the University of Westminster, Photofusion, and the City Lit. The aim of the workshops was to empower students, both photographers and would-be curators, by opening up the processes and practices of exhibiting. What the workshops taught me was that, although students are increasingly working with a career aim of exhibiting their work, they frequently leave college unprepared to start showing their work professionally.

My aim, then, has been to write a book that can be used as a guide to each stage of exhibiting so that any potential exhibitor or curator can take some control of the process. The chapters therefore follow a chronology from thinking about exhibiting to the tasks undertaken ...
