As a $9 trillion industry, it’s really not fair to say that mutual funds are dead or even dying. But Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are giving them a serious challenge for market share, and the events of 2008 could well be the tipping point.

Mutual funds are by far the most popular investment vehicle for the average American. Ask the average Joe who doesn’t even invest if he knows what a mutual fund is—of course, he does.
