IMAP and POP

Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) and Post Office Protocol (POP) for inbound e-mail paired with SMTP for outbound e-mail are alternative combinations to MAPI or Outlook Anywhere. IMAP and POP do not offer the same fidelity of features as MAPI and Outlook Anywhere. However, IMAP and POP are sometimes used to connect third-party systems and e-mail clients to Exchange.
