View Toolbars

Synopsis

When you select View Toolbars, a submenu displays listing all of the toolbars that are available for use in Excel. A toolbar is selected if a checkmark displays next to it in the menu. All existing toolbars display in the menu; this includes both default toolbars that come standard with Excel and any custom toolbars you have created. Find more information about customizing toolbars in Chapter 8.

Toolbars either sit "docked” attached to the edge of the window, usually the top, or "floating” on the screen. You can move a toolbar simply by dragging it to the desired location. Any changes you make to the toolbars are saved in the customized toolbars file (Excel.xlb) so that the changes will be available the next time you run Excel. This file is typically located in C:\windows\Profiles\user_name\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\.

You can quickly modify the buttons that display on a toolbar by selecting the arrow button next to the toolbar title on a floating toolbar, or at the end of a docked toolbar. The Add or Remove Buttons button displays when you select the arrow button for the selected toolbar. Click the button to display a list of menu options, as shown in Figure 5-2. Click on the desired options to add or remove them from the toolbar. Keep in mind that only the buttons that are system defined for that toolbar or that you have added to the toolbar display on the menu.
