Edit Paste

Synopsis

The Edit Paste option pastes the current clipboard contents at the selected location on the worksheet. If the clipboard is empty, the Edit Paste option is not available and the command is grayed out. Information is added to the clipboard using the Edit Cut or Edit Copy option within Excel or another Windows program. You can also paste information by selecting Ctrl+V or the Paste icon on the toolbar.

If the Office Clipboard is active, you can paste a copied item by clicking on the corresponding icon on the clipboard. You can also paste the entire contents of the clipboard by selecting the Paste All button (see Figure 4-1).

If you want to customize the way the clipboard contents are pasted into a worksheet you can use the Edit Paste Special option. Refer to the Edit Paste Special section, next, for more information.

Pasting the Contents of the Clipboard into the Worksheet

Be careful when pasting the contents of the clipboard into your worksheet. I recommend simply selecting the first cell location where you want to paste the information and then selecting Edit Paste. Otherwise, if you don’t select the exact number of cut or copied cells in the paste range, you will get an error message. In other words, if you copy four cells, and then try to paste those cells into a range of five cells, you get an error message.
