Name

SLN

Synopsis

Use SLN to determine the amount of depreciation for an asset during the specified time frame. The depreciation is calculated using the straight-line depreciation method, which calculates the depreciation of the asset by spreading out the cost of the asset evenly over its useful life.

To Calculate

=SLN(Cost, Salvage, Life)

All arguments of this function must have a value.

Cost

Indicates the total amount paid to acquire the asset.

Life

An integer value that indicates the number of periods that the asset will be depreciated over. For example, if you purchase a computer that will have a useful life of five years you would specify a value of 5 for the Life argument.

Example

The DDB function covered in this chapter has an example that allows you to compare the depreciation amount calculated for assets using SLN to the results of DB, DDB, and SYD. Unlike the other depreciation functions, SLN calculates the same amount of depreciation for each depreciation period.
