File Save Workspace

Synopsis

The File Save Workspace option allows you to save the necessary information about all the currently opened workbooks. This lets you open workbooks all at once in the future by simply opening the desired workspace. The workspace files have the extension of .xlw. When Excel saves the workspace it is only saving information about the specific workbooks, such as the file name and locations; it does not save the actual workbooks. Make sure you save any changes to the workbooks in the specific workbooks.

Be careful not to move a workspace or the corresponding workbook files. Excel looks for the workbooks in the same locations where the workspace was created. If Excel is unable to locate the workbook files, you will get an error message when you attempt to open the workspace.

Benefits of the XLStart Folder

To set the same workbooks to always open when you launch Excel, save your workspace file in the XLStart folder. This folder is located in your Office folder. See Chapter 2, for details about using the XLStart folder.
