File Close

Synopsis

This option closes the currently open workbook. If any modifications have been made, a message box displays asking if you want to save the workbook before closing. If you have multiple workbooks open, the Close command only closes the active workbook (the one open in the window).

A quick method for closing a workbook is to select the Close Window icon on the menu bar. When you select this icon Excel will make sure all the changes have been saved before closing. Be careful about selecting the correct Close Window icon. There is also one on the Title bar, but if you select this one the program is closed along with any other open workbooks.

As discussed in Chapter 1, Excel 2000 uses the Single Document Interface (SDI), so each time you open up a file in Excel it is opened in a new window. By the same token, when closing a workbook, that window closes, but Excel remains running until all Excel workbooks are closed.

Closing Several Workbooks at Once

To close all Excel workbooks simultaneously, hold down the Shift key before selecting the File menu and select the Close All option. The Close All option only displays on the File menu if you hold down the Shift key before selecting the menu.
