Some Hyperlink Tips

Keep the following items in mind when using hyperlinks in Excel:

  • You cannot create hyperlinks for controls that were created using the Forms toolbar or from buttons and graphics that have macros assigned to them.

  • You can create a hyperlink to a web site or an email address by typing the appropriate address directly in the cell.

  • If you do not specify a screen tip for your hyperlink the address of the link will display as the screen tip when the cursor is dragged across the link.

  • For example, if you want to create a link in your worksheet to O’Reilly and Associates, you can perform the following steps:

    1. Select the cell where you want to place the link.

    2. Select Insert Hyperlink to display the Insert Hyperlink dialog shown in Figure 6-25.

    3. Make sure the “Existing File or Web Page” icon is selected.

    4. If the active cell does not contain text or a graphical image you can indicate the text that will be placed in the cell in the “Text to display” field. In other words, instead of having the web address (URL) of http://www.oreilly.com you could indicate that you want the text of the hyperlink to be “Check out O’Reilly and Associates.”

    5. If you want to display a tip message when you drag the cursor over the link, select the ScreenTip button and specify the message you want to display.

    6. Type the URL, for the location. In this instance, it would be http://www.oreilly.com. If you have previously selected this URL either by adding it as a hyperlink or even by viewing it in your web browser, ...
