Chapter 3. Plan, install, configure, and manage transport

Exchange 2013 has two primary roles: the Mailbox role is responsible for storing and retrieving messages, and the Client Access role provides interfaces for various clients and protocols to move mail around. The transport subsystem has parts that run on both roles. Together the combination of Exchange subsystems that touch messages in transit is known as the transport pipeline, as shown in Figure 3-1. Understanding how to design, manage, configure, monitor, and troubleshoot the transport pipeline is a key requirement for managing Exchange systems, and for passing the 70-341 exam.
