Accreditation
A process administered by an accrediting association to examine the quality of an institution (or section of an institution) or institutional program against externally based, professional accrediting standards, and to decide on whether to certify that institution based on the level of quality. Typically the accreditation process includes the subject institution's self-study, a subsequent examination by a visiting panel of experts, and the accrediting association's eventual decision either to provide some level of accreditation for a given period of years or to deny accreditation.
