What Data Will You Gather?

The data you must gather will depend on the specific goals of your evaluation and also on the level at which you evaluate. For example, a level 1 evaluation may gather data on learners’ feelings about the course, its content, the facilitator, and so forth. A level 3 evaluation may monitor changes in job performance possibly influenced by training. (See chapters 36 for specific recommendations.)

As you list the data you want to gather, remember to include basic demographic data (age, gender, job position) that you will need later to distinguish for which groups your training works best.

Be prepared to make tradeoffs in the data items you gather. If you gather too few items, you may miss important trends and relationships. ...
