Abstract

This chapter examines the issues particular to demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) in public libraries. The concept of patrons selecting library materials began in public libraries, but restrictive publisher policies have helped keep catalog-integrated electronic book DDA largely out of public library licenses. This chapter discusses the efforts to help public libraries provide ebook content to users and the potential advantages of patron selection for collection diversity and balance. It discusses the recent past and current landscape of ebook and DDA lending in public library settings.
