Chapter 5

Assessing for Collection Standards

Abstract

All librarians want to build good collections, but what does that really mean? The answer is different for every library and demand-driven acquisitions (DDA) programs can help libraries achieve this goal. This chapter addresses fears that librarians might have about the destiny of collections when embarking on a DDA program. It offers ideas and examples of institutions that used DDA to meet their collection development goals. It addresses several methods that librarians can use to assess their collections in the context of their users, in light of other libraries, and in line with their future goals for establishing and preserving collections that serve their communities.
