Chapter 17Tracking Status

Tracking uses collected data to determine project status and performance trends. (Tracking also monitors the product’s key technical performance measures and process performance. See Part 5, “Estimating Products and Processes.)” Analysis converts the data into useful information. The easiest way is to plot data in various ways. “A picture is worth a thousand words.” You can fit trendlines to plots of time series data to predict (estimate) future values. You can use histograms to discern the distribution of samples in a population. You can also use various statistical techniques. Microsoft Excel is a powerful tool for analyzing data and presenting information. This chapter focuses on it.
