Programming or coding presents an interesting challenge to software cost estimators. As this edition is being written in 2007, the total number of known programming languages and dialects in the software industry exceeds 600. There are probably another 100 or so proprietary languages created for use in specific companies but unknown outside of them.

These languages range in power from very low-level assembly languages to very high level languages such as APL and Smalltalk.
