Chapter Five

Vehicle Handling Performance

Chapter 5 discusses the handling behavior of a vehicle, starting with the single-track (bicycle) model under steady-state conditions, including the concepts of understeer and neutral steer. Next, nonsteady-state behavior is discussed, including yaw stability and frequency response. In the last sections, nonlinear tire behavior is considered. Here, the vehicle response to the steering input is considered as a nonlinear system, and a number of related qualitative graphical assessment tools are discussed. This includes phase plane analysis, the handling diagram, the stability diagram, the moment method (MMM) diagram, and the “g-g” diagram.
