What Is Retopologizing?

Topology is the layout of edges and edge loops that create the polygon flow of your model. So if you use one mesh to sculpt on to a high level, you sometimes may have to retopologize it near the end to create the correct polygon flow. This was the case with the head sculpture of the Guardian. We started sculpting from a basic sphere, which is good from a sculpting standpoint but has bad topology if we plan to extract maps from it or if it were to be animated at all.

Topology is especially important for models intended for computer games, as these models must make the best use of every single polygon. They also have to deform well once they are rigged and animated.
