What Are UV Maps and Why Do I Need Them?

A UV map is a bit difficult to describe. Imagine for a moment that we have sculpted a head in traditional clay. We’re very happy with it and it’s time to add some color to it to bring it truly alive. So out come our paints and we start to get on with the job when a problem arises… we are blindfolded and can’t actually see where to apply the paint! Added to this we aren’t allowed to touch the sculpture to find out where anything is located. So how can we color our fantasy clay sculpture if in fact we have no idea where to put the paint?
