Where Are We?

This chapter has described the XML Schema definition language. XML Schemas are a type-centric XML-based description language for describing XML documents. XML Schemas are likely to supplant DTDs as the dominant mechanism for validating instance documents and documenting XML vocabularies. An XML Schema definition is fundamentally a collection of type definitions and element (and attribute) declarations that belong to a particular XML namespace. XML Schemas are highly adaptable to domains beyond XML such as database and object technologies.
