Upgrading to Portal Server

If you create web sites using SharePoint Services, then decide to upgrade the server to SharePoint Portal Server, you'll need to restore the SharePoint settings for each virtual server.

Warning

SharePoint Services installed in Active Directory mode or in host header mode can't be upgraded to Portal Server.

To upgrade a SharePoint Services site to SharePoint Portal Server, follow these general steps:

  1. Record the database settings used by each virtual server.

  2. Record the Application Pool settings used by use top-level site in IIS.

  3. Install and configure SharePoint Portal Server.

  4. Re-extend each virtual server.

  5. Connect the existing sites to the portal server.

  6. Link the existing sites to the Sites Directory in the Portal.

You must have an account with Administrative privileges to perform these tasks. The following sections explain the previous steps in more detail.
