Companies far and wide have always struggled with connecting their users with the business data stored in various locations, such as databases and fileshares, across the organization. As these companies became more successful at getting the data into an electronic format, IT departments were under pressure to meet the demands of the data consumer.

The separation between the data storage and the interface to that data typically required significant efforts in custom software development to provide applications to meet these needs. Once custom development efforts are required, then both time and effort as well as cost and project risks increase significantly.
