Before transitioning to init runlevel 0, let’s summarize how to set forth on your way to Linux-enablement when you get hold of a new device. Here’s a quick checklist.

1. Identify the device’s functionality and interface technology. Depending on what you find, review the chapter describing the associated device driver subsystem. As you learned, almost every driver subsystem on Linux contains a core layer that offers driver services, and an abstraction layer that renders applications independent of the underlying hardware (revisit Figure 18.3 in Chapter 18, “Embedding Linux”). Your driver needs to fit into this framework and interact with other components in the subsystem. ...
