The UK, France and Germany are the three largest countries in Europe. Between them, they control 60% of the telecommunications market. As indicated in Table 10.6 (later in this chapter) there are many carriers that provide broadband fiber networks and long distance services for consumers and businesses across Europe. Competition for these as well as cellular services is strong. The following statistics published on December 7, 2000 by the Commission of the European Communities in its “Sixth Report on the Implementation of the Telecommunications Regulatory Package” illustrates the impact of deregulation on prices and numbers of competitors:

  • 461 operators sell long distance service over the public network.
