Gigabit Ethernet is a high-speed method for Internet access and data communications. It currently operates at one-megabit per second to one gigabit per second, but manufacturers are developing 10-gigabit products. They use the Ethernet LAN standard, the most prevalent LAN protocol.
Customers use the Gigabit Ethernet for:
Data links between corporate, hospital and university locations within the same city or metropolitan area
Connections between Web hosting centers and the hosting centers' customers
Data connections between corporate sites in different cities
Internet access (not all Gigabit Ethernet suppliers sell Internet access)
