The Major Object-Oriented Languages

The first object-oriented language was Simula, which was developed in the 1960s in Norway for modeling the interaction of complex objects for scientific purposes. It is still available, but not widely used, and so will not be discussed here.

Smalltalk

Developed in 1971 at Xerox's famed Palo Alto Research Center (PARC), Smalltalk provides a complete graphical programming environment and is still in wide use. Most experts in the field consider it to be the best choice for object-oriented programming. The lead developer of Smalltalk, Adele Goldberg, is CEO of ParcPlace, which is now the major vendor of Smalltalk tools.
