The Psychoanalysis of a Transvestite
This chapter describes work with a patient whose fragile self-organization was effectively shored up by cross dressing. One of the “problems of perversion” Goldberg (1999) discusses is that people with perversions are often loathe to come for treatment because their symptoms produce in them a heightened sense of pleasure and aliveness, which protects them from unbearable affects. Zizek’s (1992) Enjoy Your Symptom! (a work on Lacanian psychoanalysis and culture) might be the motto on perversion’s flag. Because the path to self-transformation in such cases leads inevitably through depression, for many the cure threatens to be worse than the disease.
