Using paragraph styles in ebook creation is crucial. Ideally the styles will be used by the author at writing time, even if the content is written in a word processor.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is typical of most novels in terms of styling requirements. Each chapter begins with a chapter number and title and then contains prose text. Assuming you want the first paragraph at the beginning of each chapter to vary a little from the style of the rest of the paragraphs—maybe the first paragraph has a drop cap or doesn’t indent its first line, whereas the rest of the prose paragraphs do—you’ll need to create and apply a total of only four paragraph styles to format the majority of the book.
