Breaking implementation into manageable steps

ECM projects can be classed as either IT- or Business-led projects. When IT-led they tend to be big-bang; when business-led they tend to be incremental.

The number of milestones should be kept to a realistic number. It should be under four for any implementation, with delivery timescales kept very short to ensure that changes do not creep into the implementation.

The project manager and sponsor should be prepared to stop the project if circumstances mean the business benefits are no longer achievable, or no longer represent value for money. Project managers must consider what contingency planning needs to be put in place in case a project is not delivered on time.
