Introduction: a provocative question

Are business intelligence and data warehousing dying disciplines?

The above question might seem an odd one given that this book covers best practices for managing and leading an enterprise-scale business intelligence (BI) and data warehousing (DW) program, but it’s one that needs to be asked. At the time of this book’s publication (2015) a simple Internet search will turn up numerous articles, white papers, and blogs proclaiming – and perhaps even celebrating – the impending death of the BI/DW era that began in the 1989–1991 time frame. “A quarter century of so many under-delivering or even failed BI/DW efforts is enough!” the mantra goes, and then continues: “the age of Big Data and analytics ...
