Mid-life upgrades

Abstract

The capability of complex engineering systems requires constant review and upgrade. Given that a complex engineering system usually has a very long service life, technology, personnel, environment change over the life time of the system. The upgradability of the system depends on the ability of the engineers (at the time of designing the upgrade) to master the engineering data of the system and make changes. Hence, data management, storage, indexing for search, information accuracy are key parts of the mid-life upgrade process. The issue of data authority relates closely with certification. Approaches such as the black-box approach for mid-life upgrade projects are possible but the liability of the product performance ...
