1 ROLLE, Michel (1652–1719), French analyst, algebraist and geometer.

2 LAGRANGE, Joseph Louis (1736–1813), great French algebraist, analyst, number theorist, probabilist, physicist and astronomer. His contributions are especially to calculus of variations, analytical mechanics and astronomy. He became professor at Military Academy, Twain at 19 and later Director of Berlin Academy in 1766 at 30.

3 TAYLOR, Brook (1685–1731), English analyst, geometer, and philosopher. Published books on perspective and on calculus of finite differences.

4 DESCARTES, Rene (1596–1650), philosopher and mathematician. Born in France, lived in several countries of Western Europe, settled in Holland. Founded analytic geometry (an honour shared with Fermat) ...
