SymbianOS is an operating system designed specifically as a foundation for developing smart devices. It is a direct descendeant of the EPOC family of PDA operating systems developed by Psion. In 1998, Symbian Ltd. was established as a joint venture between Psion, Nokia, Motorola, Ericsson, and NTT DoCoMo in order to manage the future development of SymbianOS. Since then, it has become the dominant smartphone operating system, accounting for 46.6 percent of all smartphones shipped worldwide in the third quarter of 2008.
