About the Author

Alan Bjerga has made agriculture a focus of his writing since arriving in Washington, D.C., in 2001. His work on famine and the relationship between food markets and farm policy has garnered awards from the Overseas Press Club, the New York Press Club, the Kansas Press Association, the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, and the North American Agricultural Journalists. He won the North American Agricultural Journalists (NAAJ) Glenn Cunningham award, its top writing distinction, in 2005, and was the organization's president in 2010–2011. He also served as president of the National Press Club in Washington in 2010, hosting its televised speaker series and advocating for press freedom and more open government.
