Introduction to DSL

An increasing use of rich multimedia applications and network servers for data storage and application support is dramatically increasing the demand for broadband services to desktop devices such as PCs.

Streaming video and storage area networks demand broadband networks for adequate performance. The addition of real-time synchronous video for training and conferencing, audio for entertainment, and voice over IP further increases this demand for bandwidth. In addition, LAN technology has developed faster than WAN technology. LAN users have options for 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet. These higher local speeds generate demand for higher speed on the WAN.
