In the fall of 1999, I was having lunch with Gary Bloom, and he broached the idea of me returning to Oracle in some capacity. He mentioned that Larry Ellison was starting a new company called Business Online, which was Oracle's answer to the ASP boom. So, I met with Larry for two hours. Most of the time I argued about why he wanted to be in the business. “It's just a fat Exodus strategy,” I kept saying. Although not fully convinced, I thought, “How many times does a large, established software company create a new venture? Maybe there is something to this idea of hosting Oracle applications.”

Within six months it became obvious that this wasn't about hosting, or outsourcing, or managed services—it was about the future of the software ...
