The software industry sits at a crossroads. On the one hand it has been enormously successful, spawning a multibillion dollar industry that today generates at least $1 trillion in spending per year in companies around the world managing that software. Increasingly the IT budget is so dominated by the management of the availabiltiy, security, problems, performance, and change of that existing software that there is little money to spend on new software.
