The Impact of Bugs

Software failures have become a main cause of system unavailability. Jim Gray's 1990 analysis of actual system performance, titled “A Census of Tandem System Availability Between 1985 and 1990,” showed that in the 5-year period from 1985 to 1990, the main cause of outage shifted from hardware to software. In that period, outages attributed to software grew from 33% to 60% as the major source of failure. The trend has continued, given the rise in installed lines of code, dependency between vendor software, and increased performance demands.
