The Next Big Thing

The same advances in technology that have made higher levels of performance and availability possible have created new and more dangerous threats to system security. The next generation of security management will need to provide another level of service to keep up with these increased threats. Some of this, again, is about policy and procedure—or effectively executing the established policy. For example, although patches were available from Microsoft for the SoBig, Blaster, and XYZ bugs, in almost all cases the patches were never applied to production systems. The key security management process called “from development to deployment” will need to become standard practice regardless of whether operations are outsourced.
