Many hardware and software solutions are competing to provide high-availability service. Tolerating failure has been an area that has received a lot of attention. In 1974, James G. Treybig and three former HP engineers founded Tandem Computers Incorporated, now the HP NonStop Enterprise Division, in Cupertino, California. Their vision was to build a machine with enough sophistication to withstand the loss of any single component—a computer with “no single point of failure.”
