Are You Saying That 99% Isn't Good Enough?

Yes. I'm saying that 99% reliability isn't good enough. Here's why: Although measuring availability with a whole lot of 9s has been traditional, in reality the numbers all seem to blend together. 98%, 99%, 99.2%—they all seem more or less the same and all look pretty good. Maybe it's because they would all be A's and most of us would have been glad to get an A on any exam. If, instead, we consider that one year contains more than 500,000 minutes (on a 24-hour clock), 98% uptime means you're out of service for more than 10,000 minutes a year—that's 167 hours, or almost 7 days!
