How Much Do You Need?

Traditional solutions to performance management start with system sizing. The classic approach is to use analytic modeling or simulations to determine whether you have enough hardware. Typically the user is asked, “How many transactions do you expect to do this year and how many next year?” Using Excel and a little black magic, the performance expert kicks out an answer like “eight CPUs and 700GB of disk.” Analytic models rely on everything from simple Excel spreadsheets to exotic queuing models, but virtually all suffer from the inability to accurately characterize both the arrival patterns of work and the service times for a particular transaction.
