IBM's largest example to date of grid computing for an enterprise is the internal grid dubbed intraGrid. IBM's intraGrid, based on Globus, is a research and development grid that enables IBM to leverage many worldwide assets for research purposes, such as utilizing a grid to support distributed scalability testing.

HP has been a pioneer in grid computing since the early 1980s. In 1982, Joel Birnbaum, then head of HP Laboratories, described the notion of an “information utility.” Utility here was meant as an analog to the more pedestrian utilities such as water, electricity, and so on.
